When Joseph's brothers attempted to kill him, Reuben proposed not to take his life but stripped him of his robe and throw him into a cistern in the desert. According to him, he would like to rescue Joshua from hem and take him back to his father.

Judah was not as kind as Reuben since he wanted to kill Joseph but didn't like to be involved in the "bloody" murder. Selling Joseph to the Ishmaelites means separating Joseph and his father. This proposal was no better than merely killing Joshua. Judah and Joseph's brothers had to pay considerable cost for what they had done.
