When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon (1Ki 2:1). He praised Solomon was a man of wisdom (2: 6; 9), and asked him to walk in Lord's ways, and keep His decrees, commands, laws, and requirements. So he put Jacob, Shimei, and Adonijah to death because they were not loyal to David, the one ordinate by the Lord. He also removed Abiathar from the priesthood of the Lord, fulfilling the word the lord had spoken at Shiloh about the house of Eli (2:27).

From these straightforward and forthright decisions, I find he is a king who was able to cut the Gordian knot. Thus, dealing with problems by taking forceful actions without shedding blood of the innocent enabled him to establish his throne.
