It did take time to take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, but the Lord wanted Israel to make sure the power regarding the army.

Before we take any action, we ought to know how many resources we have and what our ability is, "taking a census" on properties, personnel, spiritual state, time, and goals. This way, the work/task can be done more effectively and efficiently.
