The Lord asked Nathan to tell David that he was not the one to build Him a house to dwell in (1Ch 17:3-4). David's intention was honorable but his proposal did not meet the Lord's timetable.

What is worth learning is David's attitude when he heard the Lord say that his son Solomon would be the one to build a house for the Lord (17:12). He did not complain or envy but humbled himself praying to God for His forever blessing (17: 16-27).

Being obedient to the Lord is a critical lesson to learn in our lives. David is indeed a role model.
