When answering for himself, Paul was rigid and uncompromising. Even faced with oppression and opposition, he showed no fear in defending for justice and righteousness.
"For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: …" (Ac 25:11). This claim let Festus know that Paul was not a person who was afraid of death, but a person who did not want to die for wild accusation. "I refuse not to die" instead of "I refuse to die"… How striking an appeal is!
