A man was declared "clean" while being covered with leprosy. Since it had all turned white, he was clean. One plausible explanation is due to a different species or stage of the disease. The partial disease is contagious, the total not contagious.

Another is that the context throughout Leviticus is ceremonial cleanness (Ge 35:2; Jos 22:17; 2Ch 30:18; Pr 20:9) rather than physical cleanness. When a man sees himself to be a sinful creature, all over covered with sin, but wholly depends on the grace of God for salvation, he becomes clean through the grace of God and the blood and righteousness of Christ.
