Dear all, Peng An,
Pilate represented the weakness of human will power. I believed that Pilate had correct understanding of the case on his hands, and he was also clear about the right decision he must make. Yet, under the huge pressure from the people ( or the mass), he succumbed to this pressure. He still was conscious of the wrongness of his judicial decision, that was why he still needed the ritual of handwashing.
The legend said that Pilate spent all of his after death time in Sheol, squatting near a river, trying very hard to wash his hands, which was stained with fresh blood, but in vain. Every time, he withdrew his hands from the river, his hands still were full of bloods......
