Matthew 1 includes four women in Jesus' family tree. They are Tamar (3), Rahab (5), Ruth (5), Bathsheba (6). All of them are very unlikely people.

Tamar: immorality, feigned prostitution, a Gentile
Rahab: harlotry, lying, deception, a Canaanite
Ruth: from Moab—a nation born out of incest
Bathsheba: adultery
In addition to the four women, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and David were sinners, too. This tells us that Jesus came from a long line of sinners. Yet because of this, God's grace might be richly displayed.

The genealogy is to let us know that Jesus had a background a lot like ours. He called himself "the friend of sinners." He said, "The Son of man has come to seek and to save that which is lost" (Lu 19:10). Good news!
