John thought baptism was merely formally ceremonial. What counts is whether one really repents. He encouraged the Pharisees and Sad'ducees to bear fruit that befits repentance (Ma 3:8). "Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire"(3:10).
